Raising Monarchs - AI and Fall Nectar (Help The Monarch Butterfly)
During the 2023 migration, the Monarchs faced a major drought which impacted their population due to the lack of food sources (nectar) along the migratory paths. We should definitely celebrate that they made it over this hurdle, but we should also take it's reminder: Fall Migration Nectar is incredibly important to the population. But what if you're looking to expand your garden, but aren't exactly sure what plants are best to get the job done? That's where some Artificial Intelligence can lend a hand!

Raising Monarchs - Urban Eggs and Leaves (Help The Monarch Butterfly)

In the new more urban setting I have relocated to, sourcing reliable milkweed for hungry caterpillars can be a challenge at times. Due to higher population density, more pests to the milkweed and predators to the Monarch exist, and there's always NPV, OE, and herbicides/pesticides to contend with. In this episode, an urban milkweed sourcing adventure unfolds, finding some Monarchs along the way...

    My question is not related to the topic of Fall Nectar Producing Plants. When should one stop bringing in monarch eggs/caterpillars for hand rearing? I live in Iowa zone 5B and am still finding monarch eggs and caterpillars on the milkweed plants in my area.

    I ordered my first set of larvae this year and involved the neighbor kids in the release. It was so much fun, and my husband is already excited about doing it again next year. So we’re an official waystation here, with 2 types of milkweed in Maryland zone 7B. We released 12 raised from Monarch Watch larvae and 6 wild caught 5th instar caterpillars after tagging. Thank you for the helpful video!

    Okay, I’m a moron, i tried to put paper towel down so if the chrysalis fell or the Monarch fell so it can climb back up, I accidentally knocked down a caterpillar on top of the pop up tent, it was finding a spot to J hang and possibly making the silk pad or mat, do you think the monarch caterpillar will go back up?

    I am in hardiness zone 5b, it appears that you harvest the rubber-banded pods the first week of November? When on the calendar do you go out to rubberband the pods beforehand? We have milkweed growing roadside in the tall grass and I would like to harvest and plant the seeds. I get the monarchs that visit the flowers in my yard and would like to provide them a close location to lay their eggs. When I was in middle school, used to collect the catapillars and raise them in a cage and observe the lifecycle and set the butterflies free when I was living in zone 6b. I have also done this with black swallowtails and was lucky enough to do this with a Luna Moth. It is a fascinating process to watch.

    We have a bunch of cocoons in our patio. Today we noticed a butterfly on its back on the floor. We think he had fallen off of its chrysalis while it was pumping fluid. We kept flipping it over onto its feet but I thinks it’s wings were injured. Glad we found this video bc we wanted to help it. We ended up putting the butter fly on a flower so it could enjoy nature while it can.

    ugh, its that time. I didn't want to, but her bottom wings are curled and she is so wobbly on her legs. I took her outside to test flight and she bombed straight to the ground. I cannot leave her outside to starve or be eaten alive, so this is the decision. I hope to use her good wings for someone else's damaged wings if needed. This is my first year raising monarchs. She is #4 and there are 3 others ready to leave tomorrow when the weather is better. I have 24 other chrysalis and 10 remaining caterpillars to get thru to the end. Time consuming but worth the effort. Thank you for ALL your videos. I have learned so much from your channel and I wouldn't have gone beyond my first Monarch if it wasn't for you. Thanks Again! Oh, I just realized... My first caterpillar rescue was because of another teacher. You guys are Awesome!!!

    Also when i do the math for the bleach solution for 16oz i get 0.8 is that in tablespoons?

    • @MrLundScience
      @MrLundScience 6 днів тому

      Because you used oz with your 16 oz to begin the calculation, your answer will still have those units, so 0.8 would mean 0.8 oz. To measure that out, though, tablespoons can work. 0.8 oz = 1.6 tablespoons. Since 1.6 tablespoons is almost 1.5 tablespoons, you'd be safe to use 1.5 tablespoons. In summary, begin with 1.5 tablespoons of your straight bleach, place it in a container, and then add water until you have 16 oz of solution.

    Is it unethical and/or illegal to dig up milkweed on roadways to transplant to my garden. Especially if its milkweed that gets mowed down anyway? Will it survive a transplant? I grew 15 milkweed from babies that i bought online this spring and the landcapers ripped them all out; by the roots. They may as well have ripped out my heart while they were at it. I'm desperate for more.

    Hi! Why having to cut around the egg ? Can I just leave the egg on the original whole leaf ?

  • @scottlepore7613
    @scottlepore7613 7 днів тому

    Can I spread large quantities of milkweed seeds on roadside areas (that I know are never mowed) in the fall and then expect them to grow in the spring (I know they need to stratify)? Or would they need to be planted slightly beneath the dirt and watered (which is obviously not realistic for a large scale area; at least as far as watering)? I want to contribute to large scale milkweed planting. I live in Colorado and would love to see more milkweed. There are a surprising number of areas it could be grown when you actually look for them. It seems like everything is developed and concrete or sod, but there are so many nooks and cranny's everywhere that would be great.

    If you are interested in growing milkweed, consider trying the Winter Sowing Method. I tried this for the first time this past winter (I'm near Toronto), planting milkweed seeds in November in a jug with moist potting soil. I left it outside through the winter, very low maintenance. I had about a 75% success rate, and was able to carefully transplant into the ground in June once the stalks were large enough, and they sprang right up from there - I even had a few monarch caterpillars show up! I wasn't expecting to see any the first year but I am thrilled.

    Thank you for this, and all your other videos . About 8 years ago we found our first Chrysalide on the underside of a broccoli leave and didn't know what it was. not knowing better we laid it in a container and consequently the Monarch we found the next morning had a deformed wing and never could fly. but he could flutter and lived apparently contentedly in a large tupper ware for 6 weeks. We named him Malcolm; he was our pet and we cared for him - took him on vacation with us. When he died we buried him under the big pine. Everything I needed to know I found on your videos ! thank you !!!!............................. I now live in Amherst MA - ie western Mass - and find very few eggs in June or July - very few monarchs as well and the males outnumber the females. But early August I have better luck. So the Monarchs are not ready to fly until early September. Isn't that too late for pollination ? What is there to be pollinated ? I understand that that is the time of migration. But how do these late monarchs actually benefit farmers or nature. ( They benefit us humans with their beauty, and watching them cheers us up ) Again, thank you SO much for all your teaching videos and for caring for all creatures, large and small. Edith

    If you have an infected butterfly that is in with others, but the others don’t show spores, is it still safe to release the ones that don’t appear to have them? Is it possible they are infected and the spores are not yet large enough to be detected? Especially if one does not have a higher end scope?

    Hello Mr. Lund! It’s been a while I think close to three or four years ago I came across your UA-cam channel and became obsessed with raising monarch butterflies! I’ve raised thousands of them during the last 3 to 4 years! And it’s all because of your UA-cam channel! But I have an issue these last couple weeks I’ve lost close to 10 caterpillars and it’s like they basically melt in the cage! It breaks my heart when they die no matter what stage it happens in! I wanted to ask you if there was some type of parasite or other bacteria infection that could be the issue? Or if you’ve had anything similar happened to your caterpillars? Thanks again for all your help and thank you for your knowledge. Have a great evening.

    Last summer we had far fewer monarchs than in previous years up here in mid coast Maine. In my area I found a total of 3 monarch eggs & caterpillars combined and I never saw a single adult monarch. By contrast, in 2022 I found over 60 eggs + caterpillars in the same area. I figured that it was a combination of the unusually wet weather, the lower than average temps, and the smoke from the wildfires north of us in Canada. While we didn't experience the smoke, I have family father south along the migration route that had a hard time with it. I'd love to know for sure what the cause was but I probably never will. Fortunately, this year the monarchs seem to be making up for lost time. As usual we didn't see our first monarch adult, egg, or caterpillar until July 19, but since then we have found dozens upon dozens of eggs and caterpillars and spotted a few adults in the wild as well. We just need people to plant more milkweed around here, or at least leave what's already here alone, and we'll be all set!

    • @MrLundScience
      @MrLundScience 16 днів тому

      I think it's dependent on your environment. I can only speak from my own experiences, and they are certainly from a Michigan perspective. Still, it is typical that in urban environments, because of more traffic of people and goods, more pests, invasive species, introduced species, etc., are typically present. More species have a chance to get a foothold too. From my own experience, I can attest to finding this, though it's certainly not absolute. Where I lived before, I was on the outskirts of where urban was turning into more rural. Not exactly a "suburb" as it was just a neighborhood street and no HOA, but on the cusp. If I drove west 0.1 mile, it was urban, and if I drove 0.1 mile east, it was rural. In that location, aphids weren't over many plants in the rural fields and park areas I was going to for leaves. Don't get me wrong, as sometimes they were, and sometimes, they were a LOT...decimating a plant. But, it wasn't the norm, from my experience. In a crop of milkweed, I'd find aphids, sure, and maybe a plant or two with a lot of them, but plenty of plants without many aphids. Where I am now, it is a much more urban environment, and the urban sprawl of metro Detroit goes on for quite a stretch. When I encounter milkweed in the urban sprawl of parking lots and other back alleys, they tend to be consistently riddled with aphids. Finding the aphid free stalk or two (or just not overloaded) is the rare find in the crop. Now, this could be specific to the oleander aphid and Common Milkweed, and possibly something more general for Michigan and the midwest. I'm not 100% sure what the urban milkweed might be like in, say, Atlanta, and if they have similar aphid/milkweed issues. I do know, though, the bleach treatment will apply to any of us should we wish to use it for the addressed reasons. I hope that helps!

    I can't tell you how much I have appreciated your videos over the years. A few years ago, I had a bad year for oe parasites and yours was the info I relied on for guidance on treatment. I couldn't find practical information anywhere else, and anyone who has ever raised and then euthanized a monarch knows the heartbreak. I have used your bleach method ever since and we have successfully reared hundreds of healthy monarchs. Thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge! We really appreciate your time and effort in teaching. Monarchs everywhere have a great ally in you.

      That is very heartfelt. I appreciate those words much. I'm pleased to share what I can if it's helpful, and it means nothing without others willing to put in the time with it, so thank you as well. I'll continue to try and help, when and where I can. 🙏
